ATLANTA (CBS46) -

An exclusive CBS46 Bulldog investigation has revealed tens of millions of dollars have been spent by the city of Atlanta to settle lawsuits, and the city has blown its budget doing so.

When the City of Atlanta or city workers make big mistakes, the taxpayer pays for it; and dearly. Over the last three years, the City of Atlanta paid out more than $38 million dollars in legal settlements. The city settled 226 lawsuits in all.

We ranked the top five categories:

  1.  Workplace disputes
    • 22 lawsuits
      • $4.5 million in settlements
  2. The Atlanta Police Department
    • 22 lawsuits
      • $3.9 million in settlements
  3. Incidents involving city vehicles: Driven by city employees
    • 59 lawsuits
      • $3.2 million in settlements
  4. Sidewalk injuries
    • 19 lawsuits
      • $3 million in settlements
  5. Other city negligence
    • 26 lawsuits
      • $3 million in settlements

While city driver screw-ups ranked highest in the number of settlements made, the second, but not as costly, were the 29 settlements for people falling into water meter holes. CBS46 highlighted that problem when they were installed nearly 6 years ago. The city is still paying for it.

We crunched numbers and budget lines, and found the city has been blowing its budget each year on these settlements. Just this past fiscal year, the City of Atlanta spent double what was allocated. You can read the report HERE:
