(Meredith) – A 21-year-old Michigan woman who lied about being raped on a college campus will now serve time behind bars.
A judge sentenced Mary Zolkowski to 45 days in jail on Monday after she pleaded guilty to fabricating a story about being sexually assaulted at Delta College in Bay County, according to MLive.com.
After she serves her term, Zolkowski will be on probation for two years.
In February 2017, Zolkowski filed a false police report saying a man grabbed her from behind as she was walking to her vehicle, WNEM reported. She said she only saw the suspect’s hands before he fled.
Zolkowski also refused a physical exam after the alleged incident.
Later in the investigation, the woman contradicted her original story and told authorities the suspect was an acquaintance and that she had been raped at an apartment, MLive.com reported.
During a court hearing earlier this year, she reportedly admitted to making up the entire story.
“I called Delta College and falsely reported the rape on their campus,” Zolkowski told the judge. “My mother made the initial call, and I took the phone and continued to report.”
Zolkowski’s attorney said his client has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and PTSD. As part of her sentencing, the judge also ordered her to receive a mental health evaluation.
