The father of the man killed while changing his tire in Atlanta’s Cabbagetown neighborhood this weekend said he can’t figure out why someone would have shot Justin Edwards 11 times.

Edwards had pulled over at an abandoned gas station near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard late Saturday night to check a low tire on his car.

Speaking to 11Alive’s Jon Shirek on Monday, Joel Edwards, Justin’s father, said someone wearing a hoodie walked up to Justin and shot him 11 times.

“I don’t know if this was misidentification or someone was targeting him,” Joel Edwards said. “But for someone to be shot 11 times, it carries a message — a vendetta or assassination or something. But my son was not that type of person.”

Joel said his son was a well-mannered, working-class guy who was active with his 4-year-old son.

“He tried to do better in life,” Joel said about his son. “He was a working, family man. That’s how I brought him up.”

Atlanta Police detectives are still investigating the shooting, including looking at surveillance video to see if something is visible that will help their investigation.

“He was specifically targeted,” said Capt. Reginald Moorman of the Atlanta Police Department. “The suspect actually went after this particular person.”

Moorman said there’s no question that someone purposefully slashed Justin’s tires.

Investigators say there is no evidence that Justin had had any confrontation with anyone when he and his girlfriend were out Saturday night. So detectives are digging into his past — looking for any evidence that may lead them to Justin’s killer.

Tipsters can call CrimeStoppers Atlanta. There is a reward in the case of up to $2,000. Anyone with information is asked to call 404-577-TIPS (8477). Tipsters may remain anonymous.
